What We Do
Equine Facilitated Mental Health
Counseling
uses horses as active facilitators to evoke emotions
and change behaviors in those who work with
and around them. Putting it simply, you will be
getting psychotherapy while riding a horse.
However, the horse becomes the co-therapist and
part of the treatment team.
An initial comprehensive assessment session and
treatment goals need to be completed prior to
Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy beginning.
People find it easy to attach to horses because
they show affection and can be trusted. They are
a safe haven to share emotions and trauma.
Horses facilitate the healing of grief issues
because their unconditional love fills the
emptiness caused by loss.
Anxiety & Depression
While riding and interacting with the horse, your
negative patterns of thinking and interpretations
of situations will be evaluated and challenged.
Since negative thought patterns often increase
anxiety and depression, challenging these
thoughts and replacing them with affirmations is
an effective mode of therapy.
Horses facilitate this process by enhancing
self-awareness, self-esteem, and by creating an
atmosphere of successes.
Social & Behavioral Problems
Horses are natural teachers since their social
behaviors often mimic those of humans. Horses
naturally have honesty, sincerity, and integrity
in their relationships, and we can learn from
them. They are also major motivators. You can
work on impulse control, anger management,
following directions, attention deficit problems,
and problem solving. Children especially achieve
their treatment goals quicker with the added
motivation of being on a horse.
